Losing Is a Part of Winning

No matter how good you are or think you may be at poker; you will always lose. Being a winning poker player does not mean that you are going to win every single game that you play. It does not mean you will leave every cash game ahead, and it definitely does not mean you will never lose a hand. The best poker players in the world do not enjoy losing, but they realize that it is a part of winning. You have to lose in order to win in poker.
There are many different reasons that you would have to lose. For one, you could lose just because your opponent has the best hand. This is something that is going to happen. This isn’t normally a hindrance for many people. Just about everyone realizes that they are going to lose hands and they cannot win every time.
What does become a problem however is when people hit big losing streaks. The thing you have to remember is that if you can go on big losing streaks you can also go on big winning streaks.
If you find yourself getting down about your loses, keep in mind that ultimately the money will tell you how you are doing. Consider a game of poker to be just a part of the big picture, even if you lose a game, or even a few, as long as overall you are making money then you are still a winner.
Every game of the world series of poker features a different winner, and although you will see the same winners from time to time, if poker were truly just about skill then the best players would win every time. Instead you often see a new face at the final table, because a small portion of the game is still about luck.
Keeping a wide perspective will help you keep your spirits up even if you run into some loses. Playing poker on a regular basis means that one game only fits into the puzzle, you have to look at the whole picture to get an idea of how you are doing. One game is not enough to judge how well you play, not even a few games will tell you.
There is a lot you can learn by losing. For example, if you and your opponent square up and are forced to show your hands, you can learn about that person’s betting style based on the hand they have. The next time they bet the same way, they probably have a similar hand and you can outsmart them.
Losing a hand or a game is no big deal, and it can teach you an important lesson, or it can give you insight into another player’s playing style. Use the information to your benefit and the next time you can take all his money.
As long as you take a look at the big picture you will no longer be disappointed by losing, as you will understand that it is part of winning. Trying to win all the time is a frustrating experience and can take all the enjoyment out of poker playing. Just relax and try to learn from each game you play, whether you win or lose, then take what you learned and apply it to your next game. Not only will it adjust your perspective, it will also make you a much better player and bring back the enjoyment of playing poker.
