Probably one of the most popular card games in the world and one that has been around for many years, is poker. From the casinos of the world, to the smokey backrooms of neighborhood bars; poker leads the pack in popularity for most people and as a game poker rules can be difficult to learn for the novice player.
The main thing you have to remember when learning about the game poker and the rules, is that there is a basic structure that all forms of poker adhere to, while there may exist many variations on top of that basic structure. There is a pot of something valuable (usually money) to be won by the player with the best 5 card combination after all the dust has settled after the bidding; and the cards themselves have face value as well as the different combinations of those cards produce another whole set of values which are used in the betting. In most poker games, the Ace is high and the #2 card is low.
There a numerous types of poker and some of the more popular forms are Texas Hold ‘Em, Omaha Hi, Seven Card Stud, and the oldest form of poker, 5 Card Draw. Each has its own regional area of poker players, where one type of poker is more popular than another and played most often; but all in all, the various types and varieties of poker are worldwide with only a couple being real standouts as favorites. One of these, probably the most popular by far, is Texas Hold ‘Em with the runner-up for popularity is 5 Card Draw.
You can’t just sit down at a poker table and expect to join in the game not knowing the poker rules or how the game is played, or what the values of the 5 card combinations are. You should be prepared with that info before you join a game, because a lot of the play depends on strategy and trying to psyche out your opponents which you can’t do if you don’t know what you’re doing. Learning to bid effectively is tops on the list and to do that you should know how much each card is worth, and what the hierarchy of card combos is; such as, a holding of 5 cards of the same suit would be called a flush, and that would be worth more in the betting than 3 of a kind, or a straight. The most valued 5 card combo that would give you a good shot at winning the pot would be a straight flush which is 5 cards ranging in numerical order all in the same suit—ex: 3,4,5,6,7 of spades.
In today’s poker world, the most popular game is Texas Hold ‘Em; and the game and poker rules for this type of poker are built on the same basic playing structure, it just uses more cards than other forms, and has more intricate rulings. Nevertheless, the outcome of the play is the same; the best 5 card combo takes the pot. The play itself starts with the dealer dealing 2 cards face down to each player called the hole cards, and no one can see what your hole cards are throughout the play until you reveal them at the final showdown of hands. After a round of betting, the dealer then puts out 3 cards face up on the table for everyone to see (community cards); these are called the flop and can be used by any or all players with their hole cards to make the best 5 card combo they can. Another round of betting now, and the dealer deals out another face up card on the table called the turn. More betting and now the players are ready for the final face up card on the table, the river. Whoever is left in the game at this point (has not folded his hand and stopped bidding) now bets on what he has with his hole cards and the 5 community cards on the table to make the highest in value 5 card combo he can. The hands are now shown, and the highest card combination wins the pot. If two players have identical hands, they must split the pot.
